Parking Lot Picnic SOLD11:49 PM
I haven't done plein air in a while and have been anxious to get out again. We decided to take an afternoon out at Malibu Creek State Park with it's trails, meadows and beautiful mountains. My husband , although disappointed in not being able to drive his jeep "offroad" managed to enjoy the day while sunning himself in a chair next to his Jeep. Even the parking lot has beautiful views and plenty of kids interested in what the lady with the easel was doing.
I managed to get the underpainting and one level of the painting down before the light was dimming. A good start to getting reaquainted with the outdoors. I took plenty of photos to work in studio with, but it's never the same than looking at the colors change and reflect true light. You always learn something no matter how much you get done before the sun goes down.
(The official definition for those interested....) *En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and Impressionism.
